Urad Dhuli (Black split dal skinless) – 1 cup
Onion – 2 Large (finely chopped)
Ginger – 1 teaspoon (grated)
Green chili – 2 (chopped)
Green coriander – 2 tablespoons
Tomato – medium 2 (grated without skin)
Salt per taste
Asafetida – 1 pinch
Cumin seeds – ½ teaspoon
Red chili powder – ¼ teaspoon
Coriander powder – ¼ teaspoon
Garam masala powder – ½ teaspoon
Turmeric powder – ¼ teaspoon
Oil – 3 tablespoons
Ghee (clarified butter) – 1 tablespoon
- Wash and soak dal for 2 hours.
- Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds & asafetida, when they splitter, add onions & ginger & green chili. Sauté till onions start to brown.
- Now add tomato, salt, turmeric powder & coriander powder, fry for 4-5 minutes. Add washed & soaked dal and enough water to cover the dal in the pan. Cover and cook dal for 15-20 minutes. Keep adding little water if the dal gets too dry before getting cooked to avoid burning.
- When the dal is soft yet firm, add red chili powder, garam masala, ghee & green coriander. Fry for another 2-3 minutes.
Note: This dry dal can be served with roti, chapatti. Serve with lemony onion rings or raita. Enjoy!
