Kerala Style Chicken Kurma

This chicken kurma is a great dish from Kerala. A coconut curry based chicken recipe, which is delicious to eat & east to cook. So for all those who are fond of chicken, here is one dish you must try.

The chicken here is cooked with yoghurt & coconut paste spicy curry. Try out!

Chicken – ½ Kg. (boneless, cut into small pieces, washed & cleaned)

Onion – medium 2 (thinly sliced)

Ginger – 1 inch

Garlic cloves – 2

Green chili – 3 (chopped)

Fresh green coriander – 3 tablespoon (finely chopped)

Curry leaves – 5-6

Salt per taste –

Turmeric powder – ½ teaspoon

Coriander powder – 1 teaspoon

Red chili powder – ½ teaspoon

Garam masala – ½ teaspoon

Yoghurt – ½ cup

Coconut – ½ cup (finely grated and very smooth)

Oil – 2-3 tablespoon


  • Wash and clean chicken pieces well, drain excess water and mix with yoghurt. Keep aside.
  • Now grind ginger, garlic, green chili, turmeric powder, chili powder and coriander powder together to form a fine paste.
  • Heat oil in a pan or wok and add mustard seeds & curry leaves, when the seeds splutter add sliced onion and fry till onions start becoming brown. Now add the paste with fried onions and mix well and sauté for 7-8 minutes.
  • Also add chicken pieces now with water and cook for another 25-30 minutes. When the chicken pieces are well cooked and tender, add coconut and coriander. Adjust the curry consistency as per choice. Mix well. Transfer to the serving bowl.

Note: Chicken kurma can be served with aapam, rice or chapatti. Enjoy!
