Kerala Moru Curry

Kerala is one of the favorite destinations in India with an equally great cuisine. This is a very simple yet very delicious recipe, which is also usually a part of Onam recipes too.

Here the yoghurt is blended well to form buttermilk which is then tempered well with onion, garlic, mustard seeds & curry leaves etc. the dish will surely floor you with its simplicity and great taste. Try out.

Yoghurt – 2 cups

Small onions – 3-4 (cut into small pieces)

Ginger – 1 tablespoon (thinly sliced)

Garlic cloves – 2 (finely chopped)

Green chili – 2 (finely chopped)

Curry leaves – 5-6

Grated coconut – 3 tablespoon

Salt per taste –

Cumin seeds – ½ teaspoon

Mustard seeds – ½ teaspoon

Red chili powder – ¼ teaspoon

Turmeric powder – ¼ teaspoon

Fenugreek powder – 1 pinch

Red chili whole –

Coconut oil – 1 tablespoon


  • Blend the curd with water in the blender to form fine smooth buttermilk.
  • Now grind coconut, turmeric powder, green chili & cumin seeds together. Add buttermilk to this coconut mix and set on low heat. Mix well and let it become warm, do not boil.
  • Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds, whole dried red chili, curry leaves & fenugreek powder. When the mustard seeds splutter, add onions, garlic and salt. Sauté for next 2-3 minutes.
  • Now add buttermilk to the pan. Mix all together well.

Note: Serve hot with plain rice. Enjoy!
