Spanakorizo is a spinach & rice Greek vegetarian dish, this is a typical Greek country dish, which can be served & enjoyed either hot or cold per choice. It is a Pilaf (pulao) dish. Some people also call it Greek spinach risotto.
I tried this dish once at a friends place while my stay at Egypt and I was unable to take it off my mind. Whenever I think of it, it makes me crave for it, its very simple & interesting dish but it’s damn delicious, so I had to borrow the recipe. I tried later to re create this dish at home and after a few trials, well I was almost enjoying the same taste.
To cook this Spanakorizo, you need to sauté onions & garlic along with spinach, after that add rice along with vegetable broth and season with salt & pepper, cook till its done and enjoy a nice hot delicious meal.

Rice – 1 cup (basmati)
Baby Spinach – 6 cups
Onion – ½ cup (chopped)
Garlic – 1 tablespoon (chopped)
Dill – 3 tablespoons (fresh & chopped)
Lemon zest – 1 lemon
Lemon juice – 1 lemon
Olive oil – 2 tablespoons
Salt per taste
Ground black pepper
Cumin – ½ teaspoon (ground)
Vegetable broth or stock – 2 cups
- Heat oil in a pan and add chopped onions, sauté for 5-6 minutes till the onions become translucent. Now add garlic and sauté for another 1-2 minutes.
- Add ground cumin, spinach & lemon zest and cover & cook till spinach leave wilt down.
- Now add the vegetable stock, rice, salt, pepper & dill to the spinach and bring all together to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes till rice is done.
- Now add the lemon juice & little lemon zest and serve hot.
Note: Serve hot, you can add feta cheese & fried egg on top per choice. Delicious Greek Spanakorizo is served, Enjoy, Bon Apatite!
