Travelling through India a few years ago, Sabine Baresch, not only collected life experiences but also made a stellar difference in the lives of rural women of India.
Sabine is an Austrian entrepreneur and Founder of the inspiring accessory brand Mia Malia. She got a one-way ticket to India right after she graduated university and wanted to take some time off of her schedule. While she was here, she got involved with a lot of volunteering and social work.
Sabine stayed in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh for a little while and soon after she visited Kolkata to volunteer and counsel women at Shanti Dan – a local women’s shelter of the missionaries of charity.
She says her stay at Kolkata was one of the most stirring experiences for her as she not only discovered new things about herself but helped a young girl named Malia to find her strength despite her painful background.
Baresch noticed how Malia had started opening up to her and seemed happier as the days passed by. The young girl was the inspiration behind the brand’s name – Mia Malia. Since that day Sabine had instantly created a hearty connection with the women living at Shanti Dan.
Mia Malia proudly stands for Ethical Fashion – Giving rise to fair trade and wages within India, Sabine has created a spirited community where women have received job opportunities and constant support to sustain themselves and their families successfully. Their production hub is in Rajasthan, India where the products are handmade by their female artisans.
What is Ethical Fashion?
The meaning of ethical goes beyond doing no harm. It focuses on issues to improve working conditions, remove exploitation and cater to fair trade and equal wages to uplift marginalised sections, along with supportable production where neither the environment nor animals are harmed.
Being a young lifestyle label, Mia Malia bags are luxurious and possess a touch of ethnicity. Their current handbag collection include Clutches, Tote Bags and Wallets. Their products meet the industry requirements and also incorporate age old Indian techniques of Dhurrie Weaving which are flat-woven-rugs.
Personally, I adore the colour combinations they have chosen for the bags. Paired with elegant patterns and striking colours, these bags come in the Taj, Star, and Snowflake Collections.
Mia Malia’s team is currently working on their Summer Collection designs and I am so psyched to check them out! The brand plans to add more products to their range this year and are also focussing on spreading their operations in Germany and Austria.
They offer international shipping and their products are priced between €79,00-€149,00.
Indulge yourself in some handmade happiness!
